Greece Takes On Golden Dawn

Legislation the Greek government had been preparing that calls for tougher penalties for those convicted of racist crimes, such as the rising spate of attacks on immigrants, will go the Parliament on May 10 for consideration, Justice Minister Antonis Roupakiotis said.

Speaking to the Athens-Macedonia News Agency, Roupakiotis made it clear that the draft legislation seeks to rein in the neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn, his nemesis, and often blamed for the assaults, which it has denied.

Orban talks... as Jobbik walks

Viktor Orban, the Hungarian Prime Minister, strongly condemned antisemitism and pledged to honour the memory of Holocaust victims at the World Jewish Congress, which met in Budapest last weekend, but failed to criticise the far-right Jobbik party, the third largest in parliament.

Mr Orban told the delegates: “History has taught the Hungarians that antisemitism must be recognised in time… It is especially important that we make it clear: antisemitism is unacceptable and intolerable.”

World Jewish Congress Urges EU to Ban Far-Right Parties

The World Jewish Congress (WJC) urged Europe's governments on Tuesday to consider a ban on far-right parties, at the end of a three-day conference held in Budapest.

The WJC, which represents Jewish communities outside Israel, adopted a resolution calling on governments in Europe to "consider banning neo-Nazi parties or organizations whose aim is to overthrow the democratic order, or which pose a threat to the safety and well-being of ethnic, religious or other minorities," according to AFP.

Turkey monitors Germany's neo-Nazi terror trial closely

Turkey's European Union minister has said his country closely monitored a court trial over the killing of 10 foreigners in Germany between 2000 and 2007, string of murders blamed on a neo-Nazi terror cell.

"Turkey follows the process closely. Cagatay Kilic, head of the Turkey-Germany Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group at the Turkish Parliament travelled to Germany to monitor the case. Him and other Turkish MPs follow the case closely and inform us about any developments. [Turkish] Prime Minister Erdogan also tracks the case closely. I hope that our German allies will be able to erase the negative image caused by this case," Egemen Bagis told reporters in a meeting on Wednesday with Milan Zachar, Slovakia's ambassador to Turkey, in capital Ankara.

Serbia and Russia – far right friendships?

International contacts between political organizations are a perfectly normal thing; contacts between organizations fostering radical left or right wing views less so. In the cordial contacts maintained by almost all Serbian far right parties and organizations with their Russian counterparts, there are some obvious peculiarities.

The story of the two Obraz could be considered a “not so peculiar” one. The Serbian Obraz is “the older brother” of the two; an unusual fact given that the influences have normally been exerted in the opposite direction. The Serbian Obraz was banned by a decision of the Serbian Constitutional Court in July 2012, whilst their leader, Mladen Obradovic, was sentenced to two-years in prison for threats and hate speech towards the LGBT population, as well as for coordinating violent protests during the 2010 Pride Parade. The sentence was suspended in February 2013 by the Serbian Appellate Court.
