Far-right party seeks to capitalise on riots in Sweden

Sweden is trying desperately to put last week’s riots in Stockholm behind it, and in the past week the capital has remained relatively quiet. But the questions raised by the unrest in the wealthy Nordic country have refused to go away.

A parliamentary debate on Friday, called at the instigation of the far-right, anti-immigration Sweden Democrats (SD) party, provided a taster of an issue likely to feature in the next year leading to a general election in September 2014.

French far right leader loses immunity, faces charges

French far right leader, Marine Le Pen, could face criminal charges for inciting racism, the BBC has learnt.

The French authorities opened a case against Mrs Le Pen in 2011 after she likened the sight of Muslims praying in the streets to the Nazi occupation of France.

'Ban of far right Greek party may not be helpful'

Banning the far-right Golden Dawn Party could potentially be counterproductive, Greek Deputy Minister of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights Konstantinos Karagounis told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.

Interviewed in Jerusalem before his speech at the opening of the Global Forum for Combating Anti-Semitism, Karagounis said that he has “doubts” about the World Jewish Congress’s recent call for a ban on neo-Nazi parties.

FIFA adopts new measures to combat racism in football

Soccer’s world governing body has adopted new measures meant to help combat racism around the sport. The move follows a number of incidents that drew international media attention in recent months.

The resolution introduced by Jeffrey Webb, the chairman of the FIFA's Anti-Racism and Discrimination Task force, at the world governing body's congress in Mauritius on Friday passed by a vote of 204 and just one against.

'Germany is indifferent to neo-Nazi violence'

It's an intriguing premise: Are Germans ready to elect a Jewish politician chancellor? British journalist David Crossland has written a novel exploring themes of racism and neo-Nazi violence in Germany. The Local has excerpts.

David Crossland was born in 1967 in Bonn, then the capital of West Germany, where his father was a foreign correspondent. He was educated at German schools until he was 16, and then attended a school in Bristol before studying politics and economics at Exeter University.
