Slovakia’s Jewish community wants alleged Holocaust-era war criminal to be tried in Slovakia

Slovak’s Jewish community is calling on state authorities to request that a 97-year-old alleged Holocaust-era war criminal under house arrest in Hungary stand trial in Slovakia.
Laszlo Csatary is suspected by prosecutors of abusing Jews and helping deport thousands of them in 1944 while he was a police officer in the Slovak city of Kosice — at the time part of Hungary.
Jaroslav Franek, spokesman for the Federation of Jewish Communities, said Tuesday that local Jews want Csatary to stand trial in Slovakia.
Slovakia’s Justice Ministry says it is studying the case.
Csatary has been convicted in absentia for war crimes in Czechoslovakia in 1948 and sentenced to death.
Hungarian authorities charged Csatary last week with “unlawful torture of human beings.” He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
