The Home Secretary should ban a series of marches by a right-wing group amid fears of violence on the streets, police said.
The Metropolitan Police is asking Theresa May to ban Saturday's marches by the English Defence League in Waltham Forest, north-east London, and three surrounding boroughs to prevent serious public disorder.
Chief Superintendent Peter Terry, the force's gold commander for the march, said: "We have made this decision based on specific intelligence and information, and our message is clear, we do not want people coming into the areas to attend these events."
Scotland Yard's application for a ban under section 13 of the Public Order Act will be considered in the usual way, the Home Office said.
Along with Waltham Forest, the three other boroughs affected are Tower Hamlets, Newham, and Islington.
