Woody Guthrie
a tribute to a voice against fascism and racism
Pete Seeger told Searchlight
Woody Guthrie has been an inspiration for thousands of songwriters, now wordwide, and a few of them, such as Bob Dylan, have become deservedly famous.“Woody’s song, This Land is Your Land has become as well known as any other American song, yet was never a commercial ‘hit’. It is so unusually simple that when I first heard it I thought it was just too simple. I thought it was one of Woody’s lesser efforts. That shows how wrong you can be.
And we’re just at the beginning of attempts to translate him. I think his song for very small children may last as long as there is a human race: Put Your Finger In the Air, In the Air.

Alan Lomax [the musicologist] felt that Woody came in a direct line from the ballad-makers of Wales or Scotland.
