A century of British fascism

As the century draws to a close Searchlight takes a retrospective look at British fascism. From the proto-fascist British Brothers League in 1901 to the British National Party in 1999 we provide a short history of the organisations whose main objective is to stir up racial hatred.
intro2

Different authors have written about the various periods, taking us through the rise of the fascists in the 1930s to their imprisonment during the Second World War. Unrepentent, the fascists reorganised once again, biding their time for a return to political life.

The 1970s proved to be the fascists' second great chance. By the end of the decade, though, the bubble had burst and they spent the 1980s looking at new tactics.

In the 1990s it looked as though the fascists might be able to make real headway, when a local councillor was elected in East London. However, within a short time their fortunes had dipped again.

Years of advocating terror finally saw their logical consequence when three people were killed and hundreds injured in a far-right bombing campaign in April 1999.
